City Crews Respond To Fire At Alcoa
Updated On: Sep 06, 2009 (16:25:00)

9/6/2009  City Engine 1 and Battalion Chief 3 (Hagelgans) responded to a fire at the Alcoa Aluminum plant in Manheim Township this afternoon.  14 Fire units from the Lancaster Metro area are currently on scene, and the county HAZMAT team has been requested to monitor air quality at the fire scene.

Reports from the scene indicate that molten metal was spilled in one of the buildings at the large industrial complex.  Alcoa personel trained in fire suppression contained the initial fire, but were unable to control the heavy smoke condition caused by the spill.  Upon arrival fire crews found a 20x20 foot molten metal spill smoldering on the floor of the plant.  The cause of the spill is not yet known.

Fire Fighters from Lancaster City, Manheim Township, Rohrerstown, East Petersburg, and Lancaster Township responded with EMS personnel from SVEMS and Manheim Township EMS.
